100% natural KeraSoy Pillar soy wax by Kerax, manufactured in the United Kingdom.

Soy wax is a highly sought-after wax that appeals to a wide variety of candle makers and consumers. KeraSoy Pillar soy wax is perfect for molded candles: pillar candles, wax melts, votives, tarts and decorative candles, as it is designed to contract from molds to allow easy release.

KeraSoy Pillar is a flake-form soy wax; a predominantly soy wax blend with other natural waxes, requiring no additives. Very easy to use, making it ideal for beginners.

As it is a natural product derived from renewable resources such as soy wax, each batch of wax may have a slightly different creamy-white hue.

DESCRIPTION:

KeraSoy Pillar is a blend specially developed for the production of molded candles. It is suitable for subsequent blending with fragrances and oil-soluble dyes. The Kerasoy Pillar blend is biodegradable and vegan. No animal-derived products are used and no animal testing was carried out in its manufacture.
Due to the prevalence of genetically modified soy crops on the market, we cannot guarantee entirely GMO-free sources, but we aim to source GMO-free wherever possible.

KeraSoy Pillar requires no additives other than the fragrance and colour required by the candle maker. Old or partial candles can be re-melted and the wax reused, however it is advisable not to heat the wax above 85°C or to heat it for extended periods of time. Waxes should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture.

PROPERTIES:

Melting point: 57 – 63°C
Viscosity at 100°C: 7-10

MOLDS:

Molds must be clean and free from contaminants. They should be at least at room temperature, although pre-warming to approx. 45 – 50°C can be beneficial.

COLORANT:

We recommend Bekro flake dye. Most colorants work with KeraSoy Pillar: flakes, powder, liquid, chips, blocks, etc. When using flake colorants, heat the wax to approx. 75 – 80°C, add the colorant and stir until dissolved. Powder colorants can also be dissolved in fragrance and then added to the melted wax; ensure the pigment is fully dissolved before adding. When using powder colorants dissolved in fragrance, liquid colorants or colour blocks, heat the wax to 80°C. If you want to make your candle darker or “richer”, add a small amount of black colorant to the colour you are using.

FRAGRANCE OIL:

KeraSoy Pillar has been designed for fragrance at levels between 5 – 10%. The fragrance oil we supply, developed specifically for use with natural wax, is highly recommended. The size and depth of the melt pool greatly affects fragrance throw, so correct absorption is essential. Some fragrances may react poorly with the wax causing unacceptable surface finishes or poor flame quality. This has been found to occur when fragrances not recommended for natural wax are used.

WICKS:

Natural waxes tend to require larger wick sizes than traditional paraffin wax. Fragrance, colour and candle configuration have a large impact on the best wick choice. A wick that is too large can cause sooting, accelerated burn times and guttering (wax running down the side of the candle). A wick that is too small will cause tunnelling and produce a smaller flame. Keep wicks trimmed to 5mm. If you have poor flame quality or stability, try a different wick type. Burn testing should be carried out after the candle has had the chance to set for 48 hours after pouring. We recommend ECO or TCR type wicks.

MELTING:

Temporary high temperatures (up to 85°C) have no adverse effects as long as the wax is cooled back down quickly. Higher temperatures can cause discolouration of the wax. Allow the wax to cool to the desired pouring temperature, add the fragrance and mix thoroughly. Make sure to stir the wax while it melts. Avoid using molds containing copper and zinc, as this can accelerate discolouration. Stainless steel is the material of choice, although mild steel is acceptable. Digital thermometers are readily available and are a safer choice than the traditional mercury-in-glass type.

POURING:

Pouring temperatures can vary depending on the type and size of the mold, the fragrance and colorant used, and the effects the candle maker wishes to achieve. Better mold release can be obtained by pouring at a temperature of approximately 50 – 65°C, although this will depend on the size and shape of the candle being produced. Fragrance should be added and mixed immediately before pouring, where possible. If you experience difficulties with the pouring temperature, try a lower or higher temperature in increments of 5 – 10°C. Consider pouring into pre-warmed molds for improved release properties.

TWO-POUR METHOD:

KeraSoy Pillar is formulated to require a single pour; however, for some larger molds, a top-up pour is needed to achieve the best candle surface. A small amount of wax at a slightly warmer temperature than the candle was originally poured at can be used to top up the candle before it has fully cooled (topping up after the candle is completely cold can result in reduced adhesion to the mold).

CANDLE COOLING:

Cool candles undisturbed at room temperature (approximately 25°C). Candles should be left undisturbed for 48 hours before burn testing.

TESTING:

Trim the wick. Test the candle burn for melt pool diameter after it has cooled for 48 hours. Mushrooming occurs when carbon and/or other substances accumulate at the tip of the wick, interfering with combustion. Mushrooming can cause sooting and unpleasant odours. Try different wicks until you achieve the desired melt pool diameter and a good, clean flame.

Every combination of size, wax, colorant, fragrance and wick must be tested for burn quality!
